A New Introduction to Legends of the Halcyon Era

For the uninitiated, “Legends of the Halcyon Era” is something of a passion project of mine. Quite literally, in a couple of ways.

Not only has rediscovering my old characters made me passionate about telling their story for all to see, but in doing so, it’s reignited my passion for Mega Man. And that passion for Mega Man has fed back into writing “Legends of the Halcyon Era,” and so on. It’s a cycle, but a rather pleasant one that I’m glad is a part of my life now.

Incidentally, I like to think I’ve improved in writing prose since starting this whole thing, as I’ve grown in confidence and experience.

In addition to Mega Man in all its different forms and incarnations, I’ve also been inspired by many of the various cartoons/anime, comic books/manga, and other stuff I’ve grown up with. In that way, I envision it less as being akin to something like a novel and more like the aforementioned media, i.e. a series of serialized shorter stories (some broken up into parts) that form a greater whole, with a few arcs thrown in. In that way, a goal of mine is to make it so that people can pick a place to start and hit the ground running, and go back and read what came before at their leisure. (Hence my calling each one an “episode”, rather than a “chapter”.)

It was suggested to me that something which might help aid in this endeavour would be to feature character profiles. That was something I had planned on doing eventually anyway, but it hadn’t occurred to me that in addition to serving as a recap for those who had been reading, it might also serve to help newcomers jump in.

So for the last little while, whenever I could squeeze in a little time, I’ve managed to start a “Legends of the Halcyon Era” Character Profiles page! Only six entries are there to start, covering most of the current core cast of Nytetrayn, Celeste, Fenix, Janine, Black Steel, and Adam Powers (I’m going to prioritize MegaMan Magnus next).

Each entry contains a gathering of reference art that highlights their character models and gear (all by Victor Campan!), a motto, and information about them such as their aliases, occupation, height, eye color, hair color, age, history, personality, likes, dislikes, shticks, abilities, weaknesses, and weapons/attacks. I tried to keep things succinct, though some (such as Nytetrayn and Celeste’s) tend to run a little longer, as they’ve been in the most episodes.

Incidentally, doing these has been relatively simple, since I created character sheets for a lot of them many years ago! It’s largely just been a matter of rewriting them and making sure they fit the current context and time of the story.

“Legends of the Halcyon Era” takes place in the world of Mega Man Legends, in a fashion much like how Rival Schools and Final Fight take place in the world of Street Fighter, or Maximo and Gargoyle’s Quest take place in the world of Ghosts & Goblins. I’ve always loved that kind of world-expanding storytelling, so of course I made use of it here.

It starts by following the exploits of a pair of down-on-their-luck Diggers who seek out refractors in ruins in the hopes of building a better life for themselves, only to see much of the rewards they reap go to things like paying rent. Their lives take an interesting turn when they discover Janine, a Bureaucratic Unit who was sealed away in a ruin long ago for reasons even she doesn’t remember, and things just get crazier from there.

As 2025 comes to a close, we wrap up a story arc known as “The Avion Adventure” with the two-parter “Homecoming,” which will be released in November and December — just in time for the holidays! And with that very idea in mind, I’ve been trying to rein in recent releases more towards mid-month, so that those so inclined can take the opportunity afforded by holiday breaks in each month to read and/or catch up!

In addition, after the second part of “Homecoming”, I intend to do a follow-up to my previous recap, “Legends of the Halcyon Era: The Story Thus Far,” which covered in brief the events up through the beginning of the “Revelations” story arc. The new recap will pick up from there, and cover everything up through the end of “Homecoming”.

I hope you’ll look forward to it!
