Previously, in Legends of the Halcyon Era…

After going on a journey of discovery and personal growth to another world that the Diggers from Terra could never have imagined, they finally returned home with new allies, new insights, and new secrets.

Unfortunately, the joy of the moment was short-lived, as they discovered the town of Monroe was under attack from an old enemy. Delving deep underground, the Diggers and the Dragon Knights from Avion teamed up to put a stop to Trevor Creed’s plans to raise a nigh-unstoppable force from the distant past to use for his own selfish ambitions.

After the Knights departed, the Diggers went their separate ways for the time being, with some of them planning to see Fenix off again that night. But unbeknownst to the others, Black Steel would be attacked by an unseen assailant in his own ship, and Adam Powers and Katrina would soon follow from more of the same, ultimately bringing the Sky Shark down in the forest north of town. Meanwhile, Celeste and Nytetrayn would run into two more of the machines, prompting the latter to discover a new ability, and Fenix, Janine, and MegaMan Magnus would each have an encounter of their own.

Somewhere north of town, in a crashed ship that once proudly sailed the skies, something – or rather, someone – began to stir.

As the world began to come back into focus, Black Steel looked down at himself, and took notice of the pieces of glass that were sticking out of his body. “Son of a… I thought I gave that up.”

He looked over next to him on the bed, and saw the body of Adam Powers laying motionless next to him, and jumped back slightly before holding his now-throbbing head. “Ugh, what did I get up to last night?!”

“Oh, good, you’re awake” came a voice from behind him.

Steel looked over and saw Katrina standing in the doorway to the room, holding what looked like a broken set of shades. He looked back at Adam, and noticed that he appeared to be unconscious. Erratic breathing, broken nose, bruises and lumps all about his face and head… oh, and the signature sunglasses he was never seen without were missing.

“What hap–”

“We found you unconscious aboard your crashed ship in the forest,” she said flatly. “When we brought you back here, invaders boarded, and he tried to fight one off. It nearly crushed his skull before I could finish the one that went after me and off the one that attacked him.”

“Shit,” Steel replied.

“Then we got attacked by a weird ship, and crashed here in this forest.”

As Steel plucked shards of glass from his skin, blood briefly seeped from each cut before his healing factor took care of it. While doing this, he gave a low growl and asked her, “Weird ship?”

“Yeah, it was like this funky black tube-thing that formed a mask when it prepared to fire at us. And the blast really did a number on the ship here.” Katrina added in a lower voice, “Adam is going to be pissed when he finds out about this…”

“A mask?”

“Yeah, it looked like… what were those things called? A ‘Noh’ mask?”

Steel looked away as he tried to process this, at a loss for words. Before he could formulate a reply, Katrina continued.

“Can you stand? We have to get Ian to a hospital.”

“Yeah,” Steel replied grimly, as he pulled himself to his feet. A grimace spread across his face as pain coursed through his body, though it was quickly diminishing. “So where are we, exactly?”

Katrina raised an eyebrow at Steel. She’d only set foot back on the planet earlier that day, and things were a little different from when she was last here.

Steel caught on to what she was thinking quickly enough. “I mean, a rough idea?”

“We should still be somewhere on Monroe Island, in a forest. After trying to keep from getting shot down, I kind of lost track.”

“Okay, at least we’re not off island. What about my ship?”

“I don’t know. We were too busy trying to get you to a hospital, we didn’t really get to check up on it. I’m not even sure it’s near enough to do us much good.”

Alpha-Red, Adam’s repurposed and reprogrammed miniature Hanmaru Doll Reaverbot, entered the room. “I’m afraid that so far, I have been unable to raise Mister Nytetrayn on comms. Of course, I’m also not certain they’re still functional.”

“Shit,” Steel said. “Try hailing any friendly frequencies.”

“We can’t wait,” Katrina said. “Adam needs medical attention, and all I know is that his situation is bad, maybe a fractured skull.”

Steel looked at the fallen Digger. “Moving him is not a good idea right now.”

“We can’t leave him here, and he doesn’t have the nanites healing him like you do. He needs treatment ASAP, and Alpha isn’t even sure the comms are working to get anyone to come to us. I don’t want to move him, but I don’t see any other way.”

Steel glanced at Katrina and noted how desperate she looked. “Looks like we’re hoofing it, then. I’ll carry Adam, and – wait a second, can’t you fly?”

“Not in this form,” she replied. “I thought about it, but the risk – I don’t know how people would react, and the last thing we need is to scare people off or worse, have them attack while we’re transporting wounded.”

“Hn,” Steel grunted. “Well, dammit. Okay, what about an escape ship or something? Surely this thing has one, right?”
.
“There is a life raft with some parachutes and a refractor-powered motor,” said Alpha, “but I’m afraid it will do little good on land. For now, I will make an attempt to hail any open frequencies as you’ve requested. Please come to the bridge before you depart.”

Steel crossed his fingers. “Here’s praying that the radio works…”

On the bridge, Alpha-Red opened up a transmission to all available frequencies. “This is the Sky Shark hailing anyone within range of this transmission. We have crashed in the forest on Monroe Island and have one severely injured on board. Anyone within range of this broadcast, please help us.”

Upon completing the message, the transmission ended abruptly as the communicator began to spark and fizzle. Alpha returned to the room where the others were with the news.

“If our transmitter wasn’t broken before, it is now. But I believe we can still receive transmissions.”

“Crapbaskets,” said Katrina. “Alright, we’ll give fifteen minutes to see if anyone comes, but we can’t wait any longer than that.”

***

Some distance away, a rather broken transmission reached an airship hovering on one of the beaches of Monroe Island.

“This is.. -hark hail– anyone —-in range of trans——-. — —- crashed in the —est on —roe I–and and have — —erely injure- — board. Anyone within range of this broadcast, please help –…”

“Sounds like a radio call,” said Blaster, one of the three GunRobos created by Nytetrayn to provide him support in the field by converting into a form of special heavy weaponry in an instant. After a disastrous first outing, the Avion medic Clank patched them up and upgraded their artificial intelligence to something more than rudimentary.

“Sounds like it,” said Surefire, the second of the GunRobos.

“Do we have any boards on here?”

“I don’t think so. Hammer, nails… think those would help?”

“Maybe. Those are usually used to fix boards, right?”

“Usually. I think.”

“You think?”

“Dammit, man! I’m a GunRobo, not a carpenter!”

The two carried on like this back and forth for fifteen minutes.

***

Steel sighed, frustrated. “It’s been fifteen minutes.”

“Alright then, let’s go,” Katrina said. “If someone was going to respond, they would have done so by now.”

“Okay, you take Adam, and I’ll grab his sword,” Steel said, as he went to pick up the large, refractor-empowered blade that housed the spirit of MegaMan Blade. As he grabbed it firmly by the handle and began to move it from its resting place atop some boxes next to the bed, the blade fell to the floor with a loud thunk. “On second thought, maybe you should take the sword…”

“Good idea,” Katrina said, as she handed Adam off to Steel. Adam was no lightweight, but still far more manageable for the Digger than the oversized hardware.

Their roles established, the three exited the ship.

***

Meanwhile, some distance away aboard the ship dubbed the “Dragon Star II”, Blaster and Surefire were still arguing about responding to the call.

Twirl, the eldest member of the trio, entered the bridge of the ship. “What are you two going on about?”

“Someone apparently has a broken board, and we’re trying to figure out what we need to fix it,” Blaster told him.

As Twirl tried to process this, Surefire suggested “Think glue would help?”

Who has a broken board?” Twirl asked.

“Someone on the radio,” Blaster replied.

“Let me see that,” Twirl said as he rolled his eyes and tried to pull up some sort of log of the transmission, but to no avail.

“CRAP!” Surefire shouted, giving the others a start.

“What?” Blaster asked.

“They might need a saw, too.”

“Screw it,” Twirl said. “They can take it to a hardware store. We’ve got our own job to do here.”

***

Katrina helped Steel get Adam out, and Alpha-Red followed. She took point as they headed south towards the town, or at least a clearing that would give them a better sense of where they were. All the while, she kept an eye out for any more of the machines that might be lurking nearby.

Steel likewise tried to keep aware of his surroundings, though he kept getting lost in thought. His mind raced in every which way, as he tried to get a grasp on events that felt like they were happening far quicker than he had anticipated.

In particular, he kept coming back to what Katrina had said about a Noh mask. It couldn’t be anything else, of that he was certain. Could it be that it – they? – were coming for him, before he could go after them?

“Steel,” said Katrina, breaking the Digger from his trance. “I’ve got to know: This ‘Noh’ thing that you’re after, do you know if it had a ship?”

As Steel tried to think back to the day, that terrible day he visited his mother’s grave, only to witness that thing…

His head began to ache as he tried to think about it; a throbbing, pulsing pain that seemed to only intensify the longer he tried to stay the course and follow the train of thought. He squinted his eyes as sweat began to form on his brow, ultimately stopping him in his tracks.

Katrina stopped hacking away at some of the undergrowth to check on him. “Steel…?”

“Ship… I…” Steel began to say, before he dropped to one knee as his mind swelled with pain. Katrina quickly planted the sword in the ground before racing to he and Adam’s aid, helping ease their descent, and relieving Steel of the burden of holding up their friend.

“Something… wrong… here… I might have found,” he said, letting out a grunt before continuing, “more memories… I’d forgotten…”

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to disturb you, I just hoped we could figure out a connection–”

Suddenly, Steel’s eyes widened as he cut her off. “The ship… black pillar, liquid metallic frame…”

“That matches what shot down the Sky Shark.”

Steel squinted again as the pain took hold once more, before slowly fading out.

“It was his,” he said, before getting back to his feet.

“That Noh character?”

Steel nodded. “Noh is out there. He’s the one who did this.”

Steel left Adam in Katrina’s care as he walked over and grabbed Adam’s sword. After a moment’s brief struggle, he lifted the blade and started to hack away at the brush, albeit a little slower than Katrina had been before. Even so, she let him have at it.

As Steel went to work, he muttered aloud to himself. “How the hell did he find me so quickly? And why is he attacking the others?” Katrina overheard, but kept it to herself.

Soon, the trio and their unconscious cargo found their way out of the forest, and atop a rolling hilltop that looked out over a field. And in the distance sat a small town.

Without a word, Katrina moved as quickly as she was able towards the borough with Adam in hand, with Steel keeping pace and Alpha-Red trundling along behind them as quickly as his six legs could carry him, giving their march an odd mechanical beat.

***

“Waitaminute…” Surefire said, prompting an inquisitive look from Blaster. “That transmission said ‘roe’!”

“So?”

“No, ‘roe’! I bet that means they’re not just trying to fix a board, it means they’re trying to fix a sushi board! Like a tray, or a platter!” He leaped to his feet. “This changes everything! You realize what this means, don’t you?!”

“…what?”

“It means we don’t have to take this with us!!!” he said, as he tossed the hammer aside.

“Sit down, Surefire,” Twirl told his younger sibling.

Surefire sat. And sulked.

***

As the crew of the downed Sky Shark neared the town, Alpha-Red mumbled something about needing to find a trash can to hide in and wandered off from the others. Despite his hot rod red and chrome coloring, among other customizations Adam had made to his frame, he still knew full well that a Reaverbot caught roaming about town was sure to invite undue attention.

Meanwhile, Katrina and Steel made a beeline for the medical facility, with Steel leading the way. There, they found a doctor on duty, a middle-aged man who quickly rushed Adam in to be seen while the two waited. Eventually, the doctor emerged to deliver the news.

“It’s good that you got him here when you did,” he told them. “Another hour, and your friend might have died. Like you suspected, there’s severe trauma to his skull, including a fracture, a broken nose, dislocated jaw, and a fractured cheek bone. I’ve done what I can for him here to set the bones and patch him as much as possible, but he should be delivered to a larger hospital as soon as possible so they can run a CAT scan and other tests.”

“Can I see him?” Katrina asked.

“I don’t see the harm in that,” he said. “He’s still unconscious, the poor lad. Might I ask if you know what happened to put him in this sort of condition?”

As Katrina looked for a suitable answer, Steel replied in her stead. “Pirate attack.”

The doctor nodded. “Ah, yes, I see. A rather brutal one, by the looks of it,” he said, before gesturing for them to go in and see Adam.

When Katrina entered, she saw Adam lying in the bed, still unconscious. His chestplate had been removed, something she had not seen before – she had wondered if perhaps that was as mechanical as his arms and legs. Bandages adorned his face, along with a nose splint.

She brushed a few stray hairs out of his face and took his hand in hers for a moment as she composed herself. Then she marched back out to the waiting room, where Steel had remained out of respect for their privacy.

“We need to contact the others, and get Adam moved to a larger facility.”

“So then we’d best get a hold of the others, and get moving soon,” he said. “I don’t think it’s a good idea if we stay in one place for too long.”

“I hate to bring this up, but… I have no idea how we’re going to pay for this. I don’t have any money, and I don’t know how much Adam has, or where he keeps it. Dammit, I should have asked Alpha-Red before we left, but I thought…”

Steel frowned, and felt around at his side before a look of relief spread across his face. “Thank goodness I keep money around for medical bills,” he said as he pulled out a pouch full of Zenny.

Katrina raised an eyebrow at this.

“I used to have a lot of ‘em back in the day. I didn’t always have the nanites working to heal me, y’know.”

“Oh yeah, right. That’s a new thing for you. Well, glad one of us has something.”

“I’m going to see if I can find a ship that can get us to the other island – Wingate, was it? You stay here and help the doctor get Adam ready to be moved.”

Steel departed to do that. Fortunately, since Monroe was basically the island equivalent of an off-ramp stop for airships, finding a ship on the east end of town that was headed that way – and whose pilot was open to pocketing a bunch of extra Zenny for only a little extra work – was easy enough. Once their ride was secured, Steel returned to the doctor’s office, and they moved Adam on board the ship.

“Alright,” he told her, “you go with him to the hospital. I’m going to get Nyte and the others, and we’ll meet up with you there.”

“O-okay,” Katrina said.

Hearing the trepidation in her voice, Steel reconsidered, having suddenly realized how little time she had been back on Terra. “Alpha,” he said to the small Reaverbot as it approached them when the coast was clear. “You remember the way to Nyte’s place?”

Though muffled by the garbage can, Alpha replied “Yes, Mr. Steel. If you’ll just follow me–”

“No, there’s no time for that. Different plan: I’ll go with Katrina and Adam. If those things are still targeting us, then maybe it’s better we stick together. You go to his place and tell him, or Fenix, or whoever, and inform them of the situation.”

“Very good, Mr. Steel. I will do so with all haste,” Alpha said, and he started off towards the other side of town.

“Katrina,” Steel said, as a crack of what sounded like thunder filled the sky. “Did I just put our fate in the hands of a walking garbage can?”

“I mean, when you put it like that…”

Steel shook his head. “Well, no time to worry now, let’s get moving.”

With that, they finished getting Adam secured into place and boarded the ship, which took off to the southeast towards Wingate Isle. The pilot gave their ETA at just under an hour.

***

Back at the apartment of Nytetrayn and the others, Janine and Magnus peered in through what once was their front window.

“You okay?” Janine asked Fenix, who was still dusting soot off of his armor.

“I’ve had worse. You guys?”

“I’ve fought meaner,” Magnus proclaimed. “Annoying little scrappers, though.”

“I feel dirty,” Janine said.

“Oh, then you’re not gonna wanna come in here,” said Fenix. “You’d probably wind up cleaner if you just rolled around in the dirt outside.”

“I’ll deliver you to the shower,” Magnus offered. “That is, if it still even works?”

Around ten minutes later, Nytetrayn and Celeste arrived back near the apartment. After spotting the broken window, the two looked at each other before hurrying back to their home.

As Nytetrayn opened the door and looked around inside, he could only give voice to one thought: “What the hell…?”

Magnus stepped up to the window to try to place a piece of cardboard over where he and Janine had burst through earlier. “We had uninvited guests,” he informed the two.

Janine was sitting on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket and twitching, while Fenix’s off-key singing could be heard through the bathroom door. While Celeste went to check on Jan, Nyte asked the pair, “Friends of yours?”

“We didn’t know them, and they weren’t courteous enough to introduce themselves. Seems that all they were interested in was fighting and staring awkwardly at us. They weren’t so good at the first thing, though; Jan took out hers barehanded.”

Nytetrayn raised an eyebrow at the familiar description. “What did they look like?”

“Oh, you know… kind of humanoid, but not. Big, red camera lenses for faces, four fingered hands and feet. Moved like some kind of contortionists.”

“Weird,” said Nyte. “That sounds like what I had to fight. Those two were just…”

“…creepy,” Celeste finished.

“You fought two of them? Did one go after Celeste?”

“No,” Nyte said. “The second one didn’t show up for a while, and they both seemed like they were only interested in me, thankfully.”

“How aggressive were they? Did it seem like they wanted to kill you, or just find out what you could do?”

“I’m not sure. When they got together, it seemed like they were just interested in pounding me into the dirt, but… I guess they weren’t as aggressive as they could have been, given that they started the fight and all.”

“Fascinating,” said Magnus.

Meanwhile, a trash can had been scurrying through the back alleyways as rain began to fall. The rain proved to be the perfect cover while it travelled to the Diggers’ apartment. A mechanical arm ending in a large, pointed diamond shape lifted the can just enough so that it could politely knock on the door.

“Anyway,” Nyte said, “we can compare notes more at dinner, yeah?”

A dripping wet Fenix emerged from the bathroom, covered only by the helmet on his head and the towel wrapped around his unmentionables. “Ah, the lovebirds are back!”

“No worse for wear, thankfully,” Nyte replied.

“Whyzat? Did you guys run into something, too?”

“A couple of weird Reaverbot-looking things that twisted and turned and fired lasers and stuff.”

“Sounds like there’s an infestation of the things,” Fenix said. “Worse, they’re actually harder to kill than cockroaches.”

As they talked, the knocking on the door grew louder and faster, and was soon accompanied by a muffled voice. Janine sighed and muttered “screw it” as she tossed her blanket aside and got up to answer the door.

Outside the door, there stood a familiar-looking trash can covered in raindrops, with a robotic arm pointing out from underneath. “Ah, good evening, Miss Janine,” it said. “Are Misters Nytetrayn or Fenix available?”

“Yeah, come on in,” she said, as the Reaverbot tossed aside the garbage can and clomped into the battered apartment.. “I thought you and the others went on to take care of some things?”

“Alfred!” Nytetrayn said. “Long time, no see! What’s up?”

“It is good to see you, Mister Nytetrayn. Regretfully, I come bearing unfortunate news: We require use of your ship.”

“My ship?” Nyte asked. “Something wrong with yours?”

“Er, yes. You see, we found a downed ship in the forest north of here, and it turned out to belong to Mister Steel, who was unconscious when Adam investigated. Master Adam brought him back to the Sky Shark, and was himself injured severely while repelling invaders. Then the Sky Shark was shot down by a strange ship of unknown origin. Fortunately, Miss Katrina was okay, and Mister Steel soon regained consciousness.”

“Invaders?” Celeste asked.

“What did they look like?” Nyte added.

“I did not get to see them myself, so you will have to ask Miss Katrina. She and Mister Steel are awaiting us on Wingate Isle, where Master Adam was taken to treat his injuries.”

“Well,” Fenix said as he started for what was once his room, “looks like this is going to require pants.”

“I’ll see if I can find something more appropriate, too,” Janine said as she followed him in. Celeste went to make the same preparations, albeit in the opposite direction.

“Alright, let me make a call,” Nytetrayn said, as he grabbed a walky-talky and radioed the GunRobos to bring the Dragon Star II to the area just outside of their apartment as soon as possible. All the while, Alpha-Red fidgeted nervously.

Soon, Fenix and Janine emerged from the bedroom. He was wearing his usual armor, albeit a little more damaged after the battle earlier, while she cobbled together something using some of his old spare armor parts over the typical bodysuit. Both were loaded for bear with various weapons, but whereas Fenix seemed to be focused on quantity, Janine simply had one very large gun, as well as a slim beam saber strapped to her thigh.

Celeste reappeared soon after, now wearing her armor as well.

“Alright, the ship’s on its way,” Nytetrayn announced to the rest. “Let’s get the rest of our stuff ready. No telling if we’ll get a chance to come back this way…”

Soon, the Dragon Star II arrived and set down into a hover just outside of the apartment, and a ramp deployed from the lower loading bay. The GunRobos exited shortly thereafter.

“I still think we should’ve helped fix that person’s board,” Surefire said as they left the ship.

“And I still think you should drop it!!!” Twirls said.

“Yeah?! Well, how would you feel if it was your board and no one came to help fix it after you asked?!”

Twirl didn’t have a response for that. “Fair enough,” he said. “Now shut up.”

“Do I want to know what they’re going on about?” Magnus asked.

“I doubt it,” Fenix replied.

“GunRobos, with me,” Nyte said. “We need to get the Brute on board. Janine, think you could tell the landlord we’re leaving?”

“Permanently?”

“You want to come back and pay rent every month? We were leaving anyway… this just sort of speeds things up, I guess.”

“Ah, right,” she said, as a confident (and perhaps slightly sadistic) smirk returned to her face. “Yeah, I’ll go break it to him.”

“Gently?”

Janine winked at him as she said “We’ll see.”

As the GunRobos slowly pushed the large ride armor from around back, Nyte went to give them a hand, which sped things up a bit. As they did this, Celeste took care of getting the rest of her and Nyte’s things – not that there was a whole lot – aboard the ship.

Celeste sighed as she looked at the apartment for what could be the last time.

Fenix noticed her downcast look as he hauled a trunk full of stuff aboard the ship. “Don’t feel bad,” he told her. “Home is just where you hang out with the people you love. The building is irrelevant.”

“Yeah, I suppose you’re right,” she said. “It’s just that this… this whole town, it’s like the first place I’ve ever really called ‘home’, y’know?”

Fenix nodded. “I know. Still, it’ll be nice to leave our creepy landlord behind, yeah?”

Celeste nodded in return. “That’s true. Though he has seemed a bit tamer since his encounter with East…”

Fenix was just about to ask what that was all about when Janine appeared around the corner, a wicked smile gleaming from her face. “So, how’d it go?” Celeste asked.

“Oh, he broke down sobbing. I feel so much better now.”

“Crying?”

“Well, his collection of adult magazines and tapes might have ‘accidentally’ caught fire.”

“‘Accidentally’?”

“What’s with all the one-word questions? Anyway, ‘accidentally’ like the way I ‘accidentally’ like to rub Steel. Besides, I’m pretty sure he still had some tapes of me.”

“Since when does that bother you?” Nyte asked, as he walked down the ramp after getting the Brute on board.

“Since I decided I hate his guts,” Janine said cheerfully.

“That works. And speaking of Steel, I’m surprised you aren’t more concerned he got jumped.”

“Oh, don’t worry, he’ll be okay. He can’t die yet.”

Nytetrayn raised an inquisitive eyebrow at her.

Janine smirked. “Just trust me on this.”

“Oooooh-kay,” Nyte said. “So, we ready, everyone?”

“Yep!” Celeste said.

“Then let us make haste,” Magnus said. “I have an ominous feeling about this…”

“Yeah, I know what you mean,” Nyte said as the others got aboard and he looked out at the grey sky that promised to herald a coming rain before closing the hatch,

On the bridge, Nytetrayn and the GunRobos took to the controls. “Alright, guys,” he told them, “set course for Wingate Isle.”

“Full speed ahead!” Fenix shouted.

“We’re revvin’ and ready to go!” Blaster told them.

“Hit it,” Nyte said. The GunRobo did as instructed, and the Dragon Star II blasted off towards its new destination.

To be continued…
