Previously, in Legends of the Halcyon Era…

After arriving on Avion, Nytetrayn and Black Steel ventured out to test Nytetrayn’s new upgrades, and Steel discovered he’d somehow acquired a new talent of his own: a self-healing factor. Meanwhile, Adam Powers explored Avion City and met an intriguing female Reploid named Katrina, who he started to hit it off with – before getting hit by an air bus.

Commander Black Draco and the Dragon Knights invited the group to a special dinner to get to know each other’s parties a little better, and when it was revealed that both Celeste and Steel had been dealing with issues of memory loss, the Avion Commander offered a possible solution – albeit one with certain risks involved.

The two both jumped at the chance to regain their lost memories, and when Steel came out of it, he snapped, and tried to attack an unseen enemy. After he came to his senses, Celeste went to take her turn, and as she was being seen, tensions brewing beneath the surface finally came to a boil as Nytetrayn verbally lashed out at Black Draco before departing the scene.

It would turn out that Celeste declined the treatment, ultimately deciding that whatever life she had before, she wasn’t willing to risk losing the one she’d since built, ultimately accepting who she is now and setting out to find Nytetrayn.

The following day, Steel began to train in earnest with the gold Dragon Knight, SunFlame, while Nytetrayn – at Celeste’s behest – went to speak with his creator. While they smoothed things over and began to train Nytetrayn in the use of his new upgrades, Adam was released from the hospital and the others decided to check out a local arcade.

The next day, Celeste awoke in the hotel room she had been sharing with Nytetrayn since they arrived on Avion. The day was young, no doubt owing in some part to having to acclimate to the longer days on this world.

It was still such a surreal feeling, waking up in a much nicer bed than she’d become accustomed to. In reality, their room here alone put their entire apartment back on Terra to shame. She wondered if she was going to be able to adjust when they eventually went back.

She put the thought out of her head as she looked over, and to some disappointment, noticed she was alone in the bed. She’d left Nyte on the sofa where she’d found him the night before, but when she went to check on him, he was no longer there. His armor was gone, too.

Celeste frowned a little, and shook it off. Maybe this was a good thing, and he and his creator, the Avion Supreme Commander, Black Draco, had hit it off? Really well, she figured, if he was up and out the door before she woke up, even at this early hour.

So, what to do, then? “Well,” she thought to herself as her stomach growled, “I guess breakfast is an option.” She had been so tired from all the excitement the day before that she practically fell asleep as soon as she’d come back to the hotel.

With that course of action set, she got dressed and headed out. Things were relatively quiet, as she saw no sign of the others. Nytetrayn was gone. Fenix and MegaMan Magnus might be similarly worn out from the arcade experience. She thought Adam was still in the hospital, and while she wanted to pay him a visit, it might be too early for that – especially if he’s still recovering. And Janine and Steel… well, she figured she probably wouldn’t want to interrupt whatever they might be up to together, regardless of what it was.

She was on her own.

The thought was almost intimidating, in some respects, but also kind of exciting. Not that she’d never been out on her own before, but it had been a while, and on a new world, no less?

Hey, as long as she didn’t have to go into any ruins, she was up to it.

***

Some time later, Celeste finished her breakfast at a nice little spot she found in downtown Avion City. While she was enjoying her time here, there was something about this particular restaurant that felt a little more… familiar. That is, it felt more like a place she might expect to find back home, and she appreciated the little bit of comfort she found in that.

To that end, she even ordered for herself what was dubbed the “Classic” breakfast: Eggs, ham, toast, and hashbrowns, plus a muffin for dessert. It was hearty and filling, but not too much so, and paired well with the orange juice she ordered with it. The coffee was tempting, but she wanted to mix things up a little.

After paying and leaving a good tip, Celeste exited the restaurant, once again trying to decide what to do with her day.

As she walked along, she noticed a museum. Like the others, she’d heard about how Avion came to be the place it is today in brief, but a more thorough look at the past intrigued her, curiosity compelling her to enter and have a look around.

Inside, the sensation that washed over Celeste was almost overwhelming. It looked much bigger from the inside, and felt like all the secrets of the universe could be found within its walls. She knew that was unlikely in the literal sense, but there was a lot to take in just the same.

She walked through the museum, and tried to absorb as much as she could. And there was a lot. Thousands of years of war spread across multiple planets was documented and on display here. Battles fought. Heroes fallen. Foes vanquished. Equipment salvaged. Civilizations saved.

As she ventured further, she got to see more about some of those other worlds, and about Avion’s history. Her path continued onward, going further and further back through the years.

Then, as she rounded a corner, she came across a sight more jarring to her than anything she’d seen up to that point. Nothing could prepare her for the sight of…

Herself.

But it wasn’t her. Rather, standing before her was none other than Celeste McTreggor. Or, at least, it was an exhibit featuring her, right down to a life-size model hologram which stood upon a raised pedestal that projected the image.

It was a relatively humble exhibit. Aside from maybe its stand-alone placement, there wasn’t anything that seemed to give her greater prominence, to place her above her fellow Hunter, Ark crewmates, and Avion colleagues. As Celeste looked her over, she got a sense that she might have preferred for it to be this way, if there had to be anything at all.

Staring face-to-face with the hologram, Celeste began to get a real feeling for the first time for why MoonRazor and SunFlame, and then later Black Draco and Katrina, had all reacted the way they did upon seeing her.

The resemblance was uncanny, though not identical. This Celeste had fairer skin, and her hair was a different shade of brown. She might have been just slightly taller, but that could just be down to the boots she wore, or even the platform on which the projection stood. She seemed maybe just a little older here, looked a little sterner.

Still, all of those differences seemed almost superficial. Without seeing the two side-by-side, one could easily understand how they could be confused for one-another. And even together, they could be mistaken for sisters, or even twins.

Celeste found herself a little bit in awe of the visage before her. Her placement on the pedestal made her loom a little larger, maybe larger than life, but at the same time, her demeanor felt down-to-earth. It was like looking in a mirror at a better, cooler version of herself.

In a way, it made her want to be… more.

Celeste spent the next several hours practically fixed to the spot, pulling up all the information she could on her doppelganger from another era, and trying to learn everything she could possibly manage.

Going back to records of Earth – what her world had once been – in 21XX, she found out that Celeste had worked with the Maverick Hunters. For her part, she didn’t often take on larger threats, usually fending off these mechanical beings called “Mechaniloids” and helping get humans to safety in dangerous situations. But even when confronted with a Reploid, she didn’t shrink away, but managed to hold her own. Sometimes it was only until reinforcements arrived, but other times, she handled things herself.

Watching video footage of her in action, Celeste noticed that she wielded a beam saber – like her! The design was different, but still.

Some footage showed her fighting alongside a large, black dragon Reploid, who she would soon recognize was Black Draco – Nytetrayn’s creator. The armor was a bit different, but it was clearly him. The two fought together like a well-oiled machine, like two parts of a single, cohesive unit. It was as if their two minds were one.

And while it clearly wasn’t her preferred weapon, she was occasionally spotted using a small one-handed blaster. An injury sustained during a Maverick attack from when she was younger, Celeste found, kept her from using larger two-handed artillery very effectively, but when keeping that limitation in mind, she was clearly able to manage when necessary. It reminded her of the blaster that Fenix had given her.

Years later, an older, more seasoned Celeste McTreggor was shown departing the Earth with everyone else on the Ark. Over the years of the voyage, she would embark on and even lead many away missions, traveling with other crew members from the colony as they ventured planetside in search of a new world they could call home. Along the way, they discovered all sorts of new civilizations and peoples. Some were peaceful. Others were not.

Eventually, after several hours, Celeste reached the end of the archived material. Soon after they’d discovered the world that would come to be known as Avion – this world – Celeste McTreggor would pass away, but not before getting to set foot on the planet itself.

She’d seen the mission through to the journey’s end. She left behind a family that would carry on, and lived a full life. And throughout it all, she was helping people.

Celeste reflected upon this. Celeste McTreggor was just a human, like her. She found herself surrounded by these powerful, almost godlike Reploids of all shape and description, aliens from other worlds, and more, yet she still rose to meet those many challenges, and even overcome them.

On some level, this humbled Celeste, whose track record in action had not been the greatest. However, she didn’t feel deterred. Rather, she felt inspired, motivated. She didn’t want to be timid or frightened; she wanted to be better. She wanted to be… more.

As she checked the time, she realized there were other things she didn’t want to be. Namely, locked in a closing museum, and too late to meet up with the others.

***

Back at the hotel, Celeste ran into Nytetrayn, and the two decided to grab a drink in the cafe area of the lobby while waiting to see if the others would show up. They sat at a fenced-in indoor area with windows to the outside as they talked and drank some unusual fruit juices.

“See?” Celeste said with a smile. “I told you things would work out.”

“Yeah, I know,” he begrudgingly admitted.

“And are you for real? We’re actually getting a ship?”

Nytetrayn nodded. “Yeah. Unless he’s just a really high-level prankster, anyway.”

“That’s… that’s just…” Celeste said, as she tried to find the words, before settling on one. “Wow…”

“I’ll sorta miss our place, though.”

“Yeah,” she agreed. “I know what you mean. I guess that was sort of my first real home.”

“At least we won’t have to worry about rent now. Or rather, Jan won’t.”

“Heh, bet she’ll be glad. Since she and Steel hooked up, I’m not sure if she’s really into that the same way anymore.”

Outside, a pair of figures dropped to the ground abruptly, absorbing the impact with their legs and straightening up to reveal one purple-haired humanoid in shades and a black leather jacket decorated with flames, and a larger Reploid with long black hair and a mix of cat and bird-like features.

“Hey,” said Adam, “I think I see Nyte and Cel in there!”

As Adam led the way inside, he greeted the pair at their table. “Well, aren’t you two a sight for sore eyes?”

“Hi, Adam!” Celeste said with a small wave.

“Huh?” Nyte said as he looked up at the approaching pair. “Well, look what the cat dragged in!” Nyte paused. “Er, no offense,” he said to Katrina.

“None taken,” she replied as she waved. It was mostly accurate, anyway.

Turning his attention back to Adam, Nyte asked “So, they let you go?”

“Yep. And hi, Cel, how are you?”

“Doing alright. How are you holding up?”

Adam cricked his neck a little. “I’m feeling pretty spry, considering…”

“…considering you got hit by a truck?” Katrina finished with a smirk.

“Eh, yeah,” Adam said, rubbing the back of his head. “You don’t have to remind me, though.”

Nytetrayn steeled himself for what he was about to say next. “Adam, about the other night…”

“What about it?”

“Sorry,” Nyte said, eyes lowered.

“Ah, don’t sweat it. I just didn’t want you to hate your dad without a good reason.”

“Well, we’re fortunately past that now.”

“Glad to hear it,” Adam said with a slight smirk.

“You seemed pretty worked up at the Commander that night, Nytetrayn,” Katrina said. “It okay if I ask what changed your mind?”

Nyte pointed across the table to Celeste. “She talked me into it. We met, and just sort of… worked on it, I guess.”

Katrina chuckled. “Good, I’m glad someone was able to talk some sense into you.” She looked at Celeste and gave her a thumbs up, which was reciprocated with a smile.

Nyte continued. “We’ve been doing… well, stuff. We went to a shipyard, and we’ve been practicing a lot with some of my new upgrades. I can’t wait to see what they can do to a Reaverbot! Oh, and just talking a lot, too.”

“Reaverbot?” Katrina said curiously.

“I’ll explain later,” Adam told her. “That’s cool,” he said to Nytetrayn.

A pair of tentacles snaked their way up behind Nytetrayn.

“Nyte, behind you!” Celeste tried to warn him.

The tentacles just started poking at Nytetrayn, who didn’t bother giving them the courtesy of his attention.

“Stop that, if you know what’s good for you,” Nyte said aloud, deadpan.

MegaMan Magnus retracted them as he stepped out from his hiding spot, or at least what might pass for one to anyone smaller. “You’re no fun, you know that?”

“Hey Magnus,” Adam said. “Good to know that even here on Avion, nothing’s changed about the quirkiness of our little group.”

“Yeah, go figure, that,” said Celeste.

“Speaking of, has anyone seen Fenix?”

“He seemed kind of out of it when I saw him last,” Magnus said. “Said he had a coma to slip into, or something.”

“Huh,” said Nyte. “What happened?”

“I think he’s just tired. The arcade we went to yesterday was a rather exhausting experience. First, he and Celeste danced until they were sweaty, then he took off his pants, Celeste proceeded to ream me, and then finally, Fenix humped her before exploding.”

Nytetrayn, Katrina, and Adam all stared at Magnus, various expressions of bafflement spread across their faces.

“…real funny, Magnus,” Celeste said.

“Okay, I will admit: Perhaps condensing the story in just such a way might make it sound pretty bad… but you must admit, it’s funny.”

“Maybe,” Celeste admitted with a hint of jest in her voice, prompting a chuckle from Magnus.

“Anyway, I figure it was either that, or that case of Cornerian whiskey he downed before bed.”

Katrina spit out the water she was drinking. “Cornerian whiskey?! He’ll be out for days!”

Celeste got up from her seat. “I think I’m going to go check on him, make sure he’s alright.”

“Be careful,” Nyte told her.

“Maybe I should go with her,” Katrina said as she followed.

“It’s not like he’s dangerous or anything,” Magnus said.

“That’s news,” Nyte replied. “You didn’t have to bail him out of jail that time.”

“Bail him out of jail? Really?”

“Yeah. He and a guy we know were painting the town red, or something. Hit on the mayor’s daughter, if memory serves.”

“Goodness.”

“Yeah, that sounds like something he’d do,” Adam said.

Magnus shrugged, as he and Adam took up seats with Nyte. “So, how have you two been?”

***

Upstair, the door to Fenix’s room was closed, and all seemed quiet. Warily, Celeste knocked on the door, while Katrina stood behind her, unsure of what to expect, but ready for anything.

Inside came a sound of some shuffling around, then a groggy voice called out. “Izzat you, room service? Did you bring the bucket? I promise I’ll give it back when I’m done…”

“No, Fenix,” said Celeste. “It’s just me.”

“Oh, c’mon in, the door’s unlocked!”

With Katrina close behind, Celeste entered to find a room that was dim, with only what light there was peering through the curtains illuminating it once the door had closed behind them. Perhaps more surprising was that the room seemed to be fairly clean, with only a few articles of clothing tossed over the chair. However, as they peered through the darkness, it became apparent that the area directly beneath his bed was covered in beer bottles. “Ah,” Celeste said, as she put two and two together.

“Fenix?” Celeste called out in a low voice.

Katrina ignited a small flame from her fingertip, casting a little more illumination across the room. Fenix laid there, dressed but helmetless, splayed halfway out across his bed with a sheet thrown over him. “Guess the last couple of nights finally caught up with me,” he said with a chuckle. “Aspirin wore off.”

“Oh, okay,” Celeste said.

Fenix sat up, and if he had normal eyes, they surely would have been bloodshot. As he rubbed his head, he noticed Celeste wasn’t there alone. After quickly emptying it of beer bottles, he put on his helmet, but not before a photo floated its way to the floor. Celeste picked it up, and she and Katrina saw that it was a portrait shot of a pretty young woman with short, black hair, tanned skin, and dark eyes.

“Who’s your friend?” Fenix asked Celeste.

“It’s just me, Fenix,” Katrina said.

Fenix tapped his helmet a few times as his eyes began to glow through. “Oh, hey Katrina,” he replied. “How’s Adam doing?”

“He’s good. They let him out yesterday, and he’s downstairs with Nyte and Magnus.”

Celeste nodded.

“Sounds fun,” Fenix said. “Lemme sober myself up a bit, and maybe I’ll join in.”

“Hey, Fenix? Who’s the picture of?” Celeste asked, holding it out for him.

Fenix looked around sharply, before spotting the photo in Celeste’s hands. “Oh, uh, just someone I know…”

“From here? Or back home?”

“From… home. My old home, where my mom lives. I met her there the last time I visited.”

“Is she someone you… like?” asked Katrina.

Fenix visibly stiffened at the question, then went over to the sink and began running some water. “We’re… friends,” he finally said.

“Oh, okay,” Celeste said, as she thought about that for a moment. “You carry pics of us around?”

After a pause, Fenix said “I’ve got a group shot of you, me, Nyte, and Jan in my wallet.”

“Ah, that’s sweet!” Celeste said with a smile.

Fenix chuckled. “It seemed fitting. You guys are the closest thing to family I ever had.”

Celeste nodded silently, and Katrina echoed her after another glance at the picture.

In the washroom, Fenix washed his face, took a quick, doubtful sniff of his shirt, and pulled it off before replacing it with another that had an arrow pointing downward and the word “up” upside down above it. He combed his hair, replaced his helmet, and stepped out. “Alright! Now, let’s rob that bank! Er, I mean, get down there!”

Katrina smirked while raising an eyebrow at that.

“Alrighty,” Celeste said with a smile. “Oh, and guess what?”

“Hm?”

“Actually, maybe Nyte should be the one to tell you…”

“Sure! Let’s go see him, then!” he said, as he tossed an arm around each woman’s shoulders as they headed back downstairs.

***

Back downstairs, Nyte and Magnus are drinking colas, while Adam has a cappuccino.

“…so I guess maybe Black Draco isn’t so bad, after all,” Nytetrayn said.

“Hey, guys!” Fenix said as he, Celeste, and Katrina walked up. “Wazzup?”

“Heya, Fenix,” Nyte replied. “What’s new?”

“Oh, you know. Life is good, at least when you’ve got a pretty girl under each arm.”

Katrina and Celeste both rolled their eyes, the latter turning a little red in the process. Fenix chuckled, jostled Celeste a little, and released the pair to have a seat next to Magnus, while they took their own respective seats.

Katrina looked at what Adam was drinking, and asked, “How in the name of Light’s beard can you drink that stuff this late in the day and still be able to sleep at night?”

Adam shrugged and smirked. “Hey, don’t ask me how the economy works.”

Katrina just shook her head and ordered a cola for herself.

“Hey, Nyte,” Fenix said. “Cel you had something to tell me. What happened? Finally get laid?”

“Ye– I mean, no– I mean, that’s not what I wanted to tell you.”

Celeste turned her head away as if to look at something else, her face reddening again, while Magnus burst out coughing and Katrina just sipped her drink in awkward silence.

Nyte continued. “We’re finally moving out!”

“We are?” asked Fenix.

“Yeah. Remember what we kept trying to save up for back on Terra?”

“A maid?”

“No, dumbass, a ship.”

“Dang, I could really go for a cute – wait a minute, who did you rip off to get that kind of payoff?”

“No one. It’s from… er, the Commander.”

Fenix nodded slowly. “Sounds like a blast.”

“We can finally get out of that apartment now. And no more Dick! And we can finally travel, sans airfare, without having to bum a ride!”

“Well, if you need any help, feel free to ask,” said Adam. “I’m something of an airship aficionado myself.”

“So I’ve heard. I think I’m going to be shown the ropes before we go back.”

“Sure, but there are some things you can usually only learn by experience that I can show you. Now, are they arming it?”

“Good question. Guess I’ll ask later.”

“Good idea,” Adam nodded. “It’s rough out there. You never know when you’re going to run into some pirates.”

“Yeah, we’ve seen that firsthand.”

“Guess we might be encountering more of those now,” Celeste said, a little trepidation in her voice.

Fenix frowned, and Katrina was basically lost at this point, so she sipped at her drink and pieced things together as best as she could from what little background she knew and what they were adding.

“Say,” Nyte said, breaking the silence. “Does anyone know where Steel and Jan are?”

“No clue,” said Magnus.

“Probably in their room,” Fenix added.

“…and that’s all I needed to hear,” Nyte said. “So, what should we do now?”

Adam took a long sip of his cappuccino and said “I guess it is getting kinda late.”

Nyte nodded. “I’m hungry, though, after all that training.”

Celeste agreed. “I haven’t had much since breakfast, either.”

The others agreed, and Nyte stood up. “Then I guess it’s settled. Onward, to food!” he said with a dramatic point. Then his arm dropped. “…anyone know a good place?”

“I know of several,” Katrina chimed in. “What are you in the mood for?”

“What’s good?” Nyte asked. “I’m hungry for food.”

Katrina sighed and rolled her eyes a little. “Okay, just follow me,” she said as she got up and led the way.

Soon, the group found themselves standing outside a huge, all-you-can-eat buffet.

“Now this is what I’m talking about!” Nyte exclaimed with a huge smile on his face.

“I knew you’d like it,” Kendra said proudly.

“I’m just glad I don’t have to pay for it,” Adam remarked. “I’ve seen how much this guy can put away – and that was before they fixed him!”

Inside, Nytetrayn grabbed a plate, and was immediately confounded by the first dish he saw in line. “What’s an ‘ick-yak’?”

“Just try it,” Katrina said. “I bet you’ll like it.”

“Looks meaty,” Nyte said, as he took a hunk.

Nytetrayn piled on the food, while the others followed in turn. Celeste in particular wasn’t sure how to react to Nyte’s more recent food gorgings, and just got a plate and grabbed a little here and there, mostly of more familiar stuff.

Katrina took care to point out any dishes she thought were especially tasty to anyone who was interested, Adam and Celeste in particular. They happily obliged, albeit in smaller portions. Meanwhile, much like Nyte, Fenix and Magnus were less restrained in their choices and serving sizes.

“Hmm, Armath tails?” Nyte asked, before taking one of the sauce-coated delicacies.

Finished loading up his place, Nyte took a seat at a table large enough for the group – and his food – and wasted little time in chowing down as the others soon joined him. Celeste divided her time between eating and watching.

“So, what do you think?” Katrina asked.

Nyte gave a wordless thumbs up in response while eating.

“Quite marvelous,” Magnus replied. “These mynock lungs are tasty.”

“The rynth roast is to die for,” Fenix said, as he shoved a forkful up under his helmet.

“Glad you like them!” Katrina said happily, as she sat down next to Adam, who seemed to be quietly preoccupied as he ate, and began her own meal. “How about you, Adam?”

Adam paused mid-chew, looking over at Katrina slowly. “Hmm?”

“The food? How is it?”

“Oh, it’s great,” he replied pleasantly, before resuming his meal in that preoccupied fashion.

“It’s very nice,” Celeste said, as she watched Nyte get up for seconds.

“I’m glad,” Katrina said happily.

As Nyte returned with another big plate full of food, Fenix poked Adam, who was still staring off into the void. “Hey, what’s up?” he asked.

Adam didn’t seem to notice for a moment, before eventually turning his head slowly towards the masked Digger. “Hmm?”

“You seem preoccupied.”

“Oh, sorry about that. It’s, uh, a side-effect. Of Blade.”

“What about him?”

“He’s experiencing the same things I am, and right now, he won’t quit yapping about the food.”

“What’s he experiencing from that?” Celeste asked.

“Oh, you know… smells, tastes, textures… the whole kit ‘n kaboodle. … No, Blade, that’s not an item on the buffet. … It’s an expression. … Look, I’ll tell you about it later, okay?”

Adam returned his attention to his friends. “Sorry, but it kinda slows me down. You know, trying not to subvocalize with my mouth full. Took a bit to figure that one out.”

“I see,” Celeste said.

Meanwhile, Katrina listened, unsure of what to say. So after staring at Adam for a moment, she simply took a bite of her own food.

“Not only is mumbling while eating not a pretty sight, but it turns out doing it when you’re swallowing is a bad idea, too,” Adam explained.

Nytetrayn finally finished his food, slammed down his drink, and sat back. “That was good. Have to remember this place!”

“Thanks! I just knew this was the right spot for you,” Katrina said happily, while the others finished up.

“Yeah, thanks for bringing us here, Kat,” Nyte said.

“Any time.”

“Well,” Nyte said, looking at his watch. “It’s officially ‘later’. I think I’m ready for some sleep now.”

“Yeah,” Celeste said with a yawn. “Me too.”

“I should probably be on my way, too,” Katrina said. “Oh, and Adam, stop by my lab tomorrow. I’ve got something to show you,” she added, as she transmitted the coordinates to his timepiece. Fenix nudged Adam lightly under the table at that.

“Sure,” Adam said, as he waved off Fenix’s gesture. “I could use some more sleep right now, but I’ll be sure to swing by.”

“Greet! See you then!” she said happily.

“Well, Magnus,” said Fenix. “What are we going to do tonight?”

“The same thing we do every night, Feeny – drink until we throw up!

Fenix paused, then shrugged. “Cool. I’m game.”

After settling the tab, the group exited, with Katrina flying off into the city skyline, Adam, Nytetrayn, and Celeste heading back to their hotel rooms, and Fenix and Magnus drinking until they threw up.

To be continued…
