Welcome to the X Level
Thanks to the release of Mega Man: The Wily Wars, we know what the soundtracks for the first three Mega Man games for the Nintendo Entertainment System would sound like when running through a SEGA Genesis sound chip. Unfortunately, though Capcom and SEGA’s relationship would continue to blossom and bloom, that was the last we saw of the Blue Bomber on the 16-bit platform. (And if you were in North America, you only got to hear it through the SEGA Channel until this whole “internet” thing picked up momentum.)
Meanwhile, Nintendo fans had already moved on past the Classic series at the time; while SEGA fans proudly boasted being welcomed “To the Next Level,” Super NES owners were instead enjoying being welcomed to the X level — Mega Man X, that is.
Ah, but what if Capcom had decided to release their 16-bit Super NES masterpiece on the rival hardware? We may never know for sure, but Savaged Regime has recently taken a good stab at it, as presented in this video:
If you’re looking for a specific song and don’t want to wait through the entirety of the nearly one-hour long video, there is a linked track listing available in the video’s description here, along with a link to download the whole thing in .VGM format, and even players that can run it.
For those interested in learning a little more about Mega Man‘s early days on SEGA’s hardware, be sure to check out The Gaming Historian’s video about Mega Man: The Wily Wars and Mega Man’s lone Game Gear release.
Of course, the next time Mega Man appeared on SEGA hardware, it was the CD age and the SEGA Saturn versions of Mega Man X3 and Mega Man X4 were better able to keep up with their rival counterparts who were not on a Nintendo platform this time, but Sony’s new PlayStation.
