Mega Man Legends Now Available in North American PlayStation Store (Update)

Just a quick reminder, in case you missed it or simply forgot — Mega Man Legends is now available on the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 in North America today at the low, low price of $10.

(Update: According to the comments below, the game is playable on the PlayStation Portable, though it sounds like the absence of an R2 button might make things a touch trickier.)

First released in August of 1998 for the original PlayStation, Mega Man Legends was the Blue Bomber’s original foray into the world of three-dimensional gaming. However, much as the leap to the 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System produced a Mega Man the likes of which we’d never seen before, so too did the jump to 3D — at Sony’s request.

In reimagining the idea of Mega Man in 3D, the developers went for something more “adventurous” with a whole world to explore. In Japan, Capcom went to great lengths to establish the world beforehand, including such issues as whether MegaMan (Rock) Volnutt and Roll Caskett were humans or robots, as well as the fact that this new series did indeed take place in the same world as the Classic and X series, rather than some sort of alternate timeline or universe.

Whereas Capcom of Japan was coy about how the series related to one-another beyond that, Capcom USA by and large chose to simply ignore such issues outright. Unfortunately, this lack of information would prove to be something of a turn-off for some fans of the previous iterations, whereas others dove in and enjoyed regardless.

Whether Capcom would ever overcome whatever issues were holding the game back from being re-released on the PlayStation Store have apparently now been answered, and hopefully it won’t be an issue for the foreseeable future. With this release and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, all that’s left now is to hope there are no such snags with Mega Man Legends 2 as we look to tomorrow.

After that, who knows what the future may bring?
