Mega May Ends Twice as Xtreme as It Began
This is it: The astounding five-week long “Mega May” event in the Nintendo eShop has made this one for the record books, and it ends on a high note with Mega Man Xtreme 2.
Besides its hilariously dated name, Mega Man Xtreme 2 is known for being the more original, “traditional” style of Game Boy Mega Man game from the two X series installments. That is to say, it’s more of a remix of series elements than the first game, which pretty much just lifted them wholesale before “demaking” them into an 8-bit format.
This adventure, which takes place between Mega Man X3 and Mega Man X4, follows X and Zero to an island where reploids’ “souls” are being erased (hence the Japanese version’s name, Rockman X2: Soul Eraser). Behind this scheme are a pair of new villains, cult favorites Berkana and Gareth.
X and Zero start on separate missions, each taking on four levels and one of the two new characters named above, with the completion of that opening a mode in which either Maverick Hunter can take on the whole shebang, or continue trading off. For longtime players, this will be significant as it’s the one time Zero has taken on Mavericks from the Super NES games.
Oh, and did we mention that Iris is giving them support as their Navigator? Pre-Mega Man X4, remember.
As for our friends in Europe, Capcom Unity has not yet taken to the rooftops to shout about a release to the masses. They have, however, been playing each Mega May title on “Throwback Thursday,” so if anyone wants to see them play the game before making a purchase, here’s the link.
Or, if that’s a bit too much for you and you just want a taste, have at the Nintendo eShop trailer:
