Street Fighter X Tekken Review Roundup

Street Fighter x Tekken hits stores today in North America! The reviews are in, and it’s looking like Street Fighter x Tekken is poised to one of this year’s best fighting games. Famitsu reviewed the game last week, giving the PS3 version a 35/40 and the Xbox 360 version 34/40, but now we English-speakers can read what other publications have to say.
Across the board, the game’s various modes and new game mechanics are being heraled as deep and innovative, while the character roster is also getting two thumbs up. Time will tell on how Bad Box Art Mega Man handles (as he needs to be unlocked through DLC), but it’s comforting to see this installment of the crossover series get so much love.

Following are excerpts from some of the more popular sites.

Destructoid (8.5/10)

It’s hard to tell whether or not Street Fighter X Tekken will blow up like Street Fighter IV did with the competitive community, but given how good it is, I hope it does. Despite the lack of story options, there’s plenty of solid gameplay to be had here, and the online features are going to keep people playing for quite a while. Namco has its work cut out for them with Tekken X Street Fighter.

IGN (9/10)

Street Fighter X Tekken combines some of the best elements from each franchise. While the focus is obviously shifted towards Street Fighter for this entry, (there is a planned Tekken X Street Fighter game in development at Namco Bandai which will conversely focus more on Tekken‘s style of gameplay), the tag system and manual throws are pulled from the Tekken franchise. The resulting experience feels fresh, not owing too much to either side of its parentage.

Kotaku

There’s plenty of content in Street Fighter X Tekken geared towards players that would rather keep away from online play. Unique stories unfold for each matched pair of fighters, making replaying the game’s arcade mode multiple times a must. Challenge mode is available for each character, giving the player a chance to master moves simple and complex. Mission mode features a series of fights with specific win conditions, putting acquired skills to the ultimate test. Can you defeat Balrog using only normal attacks? I can’t, but I’m drinking milk.

Gamespot (8.5/10)

Street Fighter X Tekken provides complex combat in an inviting package. The fighting genre needs to become accessible to a wider range of players, and this game takes an important step in the right direction. Accessibility that doesn’t come at the expense of variety is a smart move and sets this fun and flashy fighter apart from the pack.

As always, remember that there might be content inappropriate for some ages on some of these other sites (especially in the comments sections). All in all, SFxT is being very warmly received, though there are some apparent issues with online connectivity that need to be smoothed out.

What do you think? Are you going to buy SFxT? Are you already playing it? Let us know if it’s worth the money!
