Mega Man Lands on Paste Magazine’s Top 40 Robots

The term “robot” celebrated its 90th anniversary this week, after first appearing in the play R.U.R. (“Rossum’s Universal Robots”) by Karel Čapek. To celebrate the creation of one of the greatest concepts to appear in science fiction and science fact alike, Paste Magazine has assembled a list of “The 40 Best Robots of All Time,” both real and make-believe. And don’t worry, you won’t find any cyborgs like Seven of Nine or Robocop here, though some may dispute the inclusion of the likes of KITT among the rankings.
Naturally, part of the reason we are bringing this up is because our favorite Super Fighting Robot, Mega Man, made the list. Sadly, however, he was only ranked at #35. Perhaps Mega Man X would have fared better? Nonetheless, here is what they had to say about the Blue Bomber:

Mega Man predated saving. To keep advancing through Dr. Wily’s nefarious plots, you had to leave your console on and play from the last checkpoint. The amount of electricity powering our NES to beat Mega Man 1 and 2 might have powered an actual robot. Mega Man (known as Rock Man outside the U.S.) now has over 50 games to his name and is a staple in gaming history.—Sean Doyle

Hmm… should anyone tell them that Mega Man 2 featured the introduction of passwords to the series, thus making their efforts to retain their progress unnecessary? Nah… we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they were somewhere in the Dr. Wily levels when it came time to sleep.

To see the rest of the rankings, check out their full feature to see the list of 34 other robots who bested our Blue Bomber (which includes another Blue Bomber).
