Mega Man 2 on 3DS? (Update)
While the past few days have been chock-full of E3 excitement (would that make it E4?), odds are that if you visit this site, you’ve noticed a clear lack of presence from the Blue Bomber at the show.
Yeah, we know. And God help poor Heat Man’s credit card bill if something doesn’t surface in the next 30+ hours or so, give or take. We might have to start sending Eddie around to collect Zenny donations.
That aside, there is one teeny, tiny little tidbit of news regarding Mega Man from the show. It’s not much, but any port in a storm, right?
Since Nintendo revealed their upcoming 3DS handheld gaming system, a number of titles have been named for it which give it a link to the past: Star Fox 64, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time— but not A Link to the Past.
According to IGN, however, there is a tech demo in Nintendo’s booth which allows users to cycle through numerous games from the NES and Super NES era, each given the 3D treatment. And one such game is none other than Mega Man 2.
Of course, it’s not the sort of 3D-ish Mega Man 2 we’ve come to know previously; rather, it’s the same old classic NES title with the sprites and foreground objects brought forward, while background elements are pushed back.
This was one among many games available, which IGN notes “was fun to see the added depth,” with extra attention paid to “Bald Bull’s bulging bicep coming out of the rest of his body, or Tennis‘s classic perspective drifting off into the distance. It worked.”
“And even if you just want to play standard flat 2D NES games, just slide the 3D effect off on the switch.”
Whether or not anything more comes of the concept remains to be seen; for now, it seems just as likely that it will remain a tech demo. But, supposing developers were interested in fleshing out the concept: would you want to see some of Capcom’s oldschool Mega Man (and perhaps Mega Man X titles re-released for the handheld with 3D visual effects in play? Sound off in the comments below.
Oh, and one other thing: don’t bother looking for video of this demo. I’ll let famed Star Trek alumni George Takei explain why:
…yeah, he’s talking about an entirely different piece of technology, but the point still stands.

Update: Omar has passed along some further information on what we can expect from these classic titles presented in 3D.
Kotaku had the opportunity to speak to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime about these demos, and whether or not they would all be appearing as actual 3DS titles.
He answered in the affirmative, but added that they should not be considered as remakes. Echoing the sentiments given by Nintendo’s head developer, Shigeru Miyamoto, from a round table discussion from earlier in the week, Fils-Aime said that beyond simply porting the games to the new platform, they would like to try new features in the games that would make use of the 3D effects.
